Basic Dribble
Dribbling is the most fundamental aspect
of ball handling. It is the only way you can advance the ball up the
court without passing. Dribbling is one of the three main fundamentals
of offense. (The other two offensive options are passing and shooting).
Effective ball-handling is an essential skill to master in the game of basketball. At every level of the game, players who handle the ball effectively are among the most valuable assets on any basketball team. Learning the Basic Dribble will allow you to advance the ball efficiently as well as create scoring opportunities for yourself and your teammates. When you master the Basic Dribble, you can move on to advanced ball-handling skills (they will be covered later in this segment) to break down defenses in transition and in the half court set.
Use the Basic Dribble to advance the ball on offense. It is your primary individual weapon in creating space for yourself to pass or shoot. You will need to execute the Basic Dribble to change directions, drive toward the basket for a lay up or create space for your jump shot.
Begin with an aggressive athletic stance. Secure the ball with your primary hand. Spread your fingers apart and strike the ball with your fingertips instead of your palm, directing it at the floor. Do not look at the ball when dribbling, learn to get the feel for it bouncing back in your hand. Keep your head up and walk or run forward while repeating the Basic Dribble at the maximum speed you can control it. Use your wrist to control the dribbling tempo. Practice with both hands while maintaining sound body positioning. Keep the ball low to the ground and extend the off arm outwards for balance and protection from the defender.
Body position is extremely important when handling the ball. Always be athletic in your stance and decisive with your moves so that you can be as quick and deliberate as possible in whatever direction you go. Always keep your head up and watch for double teams and the out of bounds lines. You don't want to dribble yourself into a trap or turnover!
