Begin with an aggressive athletic stance. Secure the ball with
your primary hand. Spread your fingers apart and strike the ball with
your fingertips instead of your palm, directing it at the floor. Do
not look at the ball when dribbling, learn to get the feel for it
bouncing back in your hand. Keep your head up and walk or run forward
while repeating the Basic Dribble at the maximum speed you can control
it. Use your wrist to control the dribbling tempo. Practice with both
hands while maintaining sound body positioning. Keep the ball low to
the ground and extend the off arm outwards for balance and protection
from the defender.
Body position is extremely important when
handling the ball. Always be athletic in your stance and decisive with
your moves so that you can be as quick and deliberate as possible in
whatever direction you go. Always keep your head up and watch for
double teams and the out of bounds lines. You don't want to dribble
yourself into a trap or turnover!
